Hard window treatments

Hard window treatments are made in a factory. There are three main types:

Shutters are a long-term covering for windows that have either stationary or ‘tilt up and down’ horizontal slats. Some shutters fold across the window.
Blinds have slats, or louvers, which open so you can see out the window. Wood, faux wood, aluminum, and vinyl are favored materials. 1-inch mini window blinds are popular. Vertical blinds are ideal for large windows or patio doors.
Shades are made of fabric that rolls, stacks, or folds to create a view to the outside. Cellular shades, which stack up in small pleats, are popular. Top-down, bottom-up shades and blinds are trendy.

Soft window treatments

Soft window treatments can be personalized with fabric selection, colors, and sizes. These window coverings are made of soft materials:

Lined drapes hang straight in loose folds. Heavy fabrics in solid colors are the norm, and lining fabric can be heavy to block out all outside light.
Unlined curtains are most often made of light fabrics that come in a multitude of designs. Like drapes, curtains are usually sold in pairs. Sheer curtains provide the least amount of privacy but allow the most daylight into a room.
Ornamental valances cover the top of the window. Most often, they are made with fabric only or with a board that is covered with fabric.
